Chapter Ten

Elisabeth Carnes looked about thirty, which put her right around or just over fifty most likely. She was still quite beautiful with long wavy bright red hair and warm liquid brown eyes. She had slightly bowed lips, long eyelashes, and strong cheekbones giving her a classic beauty. Her body was very much in shape, yet a lushly inviting perfect hourglass shape with bountiful breasts not unlike his Katie, with slightly fairer skin.

She seemed welcoming enough when they’d arrived, and as they ate dinner she was a graceful hostess. They avoided any mention of business during dinner, and she guided them rather effortlessly in small talk as they got to know each other without anything too personal coming up.

He got the impression she was a good ruler. One that had the best interests of her people at heart. He suspected that’s what had her so against the war, or at least it was one of the driving reasons.

Mei was at the table as well, and gave him her cold yet wistful glances often, which just backed up the idea his initial reaction to her offer was the right one. He didn’t think the woman had much use for men, and for her to serve him in all ways would’ve been a duty and a thrill only because of how he’d been born. In fact, he was getting the distinct impression Mei would much rather fuck her mistress and most likely wasn’t truly attracted to men at all in that way.

He didn’t judge her for that latter, same sex couples didn’t bother him in the least, but the former did bother him. It was creepy. He was a powerful sorcerer but just a man, not something to be venerated and adored. He tried to put it behind him though. Mei could be a good ally in Katie’s mission, and it didn’t have to go any farther than that. He reminded himself that it also didn’t make her a bad person or crazy, in fact she seemed quite normal and reasonable about every other subject. It was the culture in China, treating the emperor as a god and his children as demi-gods was bound to have a strange effect on them and how they saw the royal family.

The dining room was bedecked with artwork on the walls depicting villages from a distance as well as landscapes. He bet they were all her villages, perhaps a constant reminder to Elisabeth of her responsibilities, or maybe some subtle point to be made to the other rulers when they dined with her that was lost on him. The table was elaborately carved on the edges and legs, and though there were seven of them they took up less than half of the twenty-person dining table.

The mansion itself was enchanted heavily for comfort as far as temperature regulation and lighting, much like Katie’s sanctuary and the house he’d grown up in.

The best part of being at dinner was the four ladies were no longer teasing him.
